“The Reading” 2013
“The Reading” 2013
On the 4th of July we will again honor our veterans with “The Reading”. In 2012 the goal was to read aloud in one sitting every one of the 70,000+ names of those interred at the Houston National Cemetery. Starting on the first weekend in July, volunteers began reading the names. The reading was done non-stop for the next 40 hours until the last name was read. “What an honor to be a part of this” as stated by one volunteer reader. Others simply sat quietly and listened with tears in their eyes. For 2013 we will again take on the challenge along with some changes.
The Reading for 2013 is scheduled for July 4th at Sunrise at the Houston National Cemetery. We will read each section of the cemetery simultaneously beginning at sunrise. Hundreds of readers are needed that morning.
We’ll all start at the same time all across the cemetery in every section. The expectation is that we will complete the reading in about 2-3 hours.
Frequently Asked Questions / Answers:
- Yes, you can read any section you like.
- No, you don’t have to pick a time, as we will be doing it all at once.
- The names of those in the columbariums will be read from the podium.
